In a conversation with Laura Dern for Interview, Burnett shared that she had the opportunity to meet one of the actors she greatly admired, and her experience with him was even better than she had hoped.

While chatting, Dern mentioned that Burnett possessed a unique “kind of power” on set that inspired everyone to give their best performance, highlighting that the 92-year-old legend maintained her influence with elegance and modesty. Dern’s words made Burnett recall another influential star she had once encountered.

One of the most pleasant people I have ever encountered in my life was my movie star idol, and that wasJimmy Stewart.Everyone adored him,” Burnett remarked. “Naturally, if you’re going to grant someone authority, he definitely had it. However, I’ve never encountered anyone who was such a prominent figure yet remained so modest.

She said, “That’s the kind of person he was. God knows he accomplished some amazing things and created some incredible films, but there wasn’t anyone I’ve ever met who was more kind-hearted, and that’s simply who he was.”

Stewart, who passed away in 1997 at the age of 89, gained his first major opportunity in 1932, when he made his Broadway debut inCarry Nation. The performer later joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and rose to the position of a commanding officer before eventually resuming his renowned acting career.

Stewart received the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 1940 film.The Philadelphia Story, and was also nominated for the 1939’sMr. Smith Goes to Washington, 1946’s It’s a Wonderful Life, 1950’s Harvey and 1959’s Anatomy of a Murder.

In the mid-1950s, Burnett was just beginning her career, landing her first consistent on-screen role in a comedy series.Stanley as Celia, the girlfriend of Buddy Hackett’s main character. Shortly thereafter, in 1957, Burnett established herself as a cherished American comedian with her popular parody performance, “I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles,” and then appeared inThe Garry Moore Show, which eventually led to her winning an Emmy Award — her initial one among many.
