Gary Coleman’s time as a prominent figure in Hollywood came to an end when he passed away with no money.
The show Diff’rent Strokes reportedly earned him $18 million for his role, which he began at only 10 years old. Having entered Hollywood as a child, whichtends to signal a tragic outcome similar to Bobby Driscoll’s fate, his parents managed his career and finances. This setup reportedly led to problems for him later in life, particularly as he thought about leaving.Hollywood for good.

After achieving success on Diff’rent Strokes, Gary wished to leave because “he was drained, completely worn out, and withdrew. He experienced a severe depression for several months,” revealed his friend and former business manager Dion Mial in GARY Peacock’s docuseries about the icon.
Nevertheless, his parents and people nearby at that time reportedly prevented him from departing. He returned to the screen to take on his role again on multiple occasions, but his connection to the character of Arnold continued to trouble him, as he was unable to escape the image associated with it.
“You need to get up and work. There are people counting on you. You have to do what needs to be done,” his father was heard saying, as reported by his co-star Todd Bridges.
After he finally transitioned into adulthood, Gary faced numerous legal problems as he expressed his frustration by attacking others in various aspects of life. He also started to examine the circumstances surrounding his financial condition.
After consulting with a lawyer, who found that much of his money was being sent to others, he separated from his family and management team. Before his passing, Gary never reconciled with his parents, who denied any improper use of his finances. They stated they were not “aware” that only 20% of the funds were going to Gary, while the rest was directed elsewhere.
“It’s a curse to exploit children. We’ve been completely honest about everything,” Gary’s father stated.
Gary passed away on May 28, 2010, following two days in the hospital due to a fall. At 42 years old, he was suffering from seizures and an epidural hematoma. Even after his death, conflicts over his estate caused tension within his family, leading to the cancellation of his funeral due to disputes regarding his will.
In the end, one version of the will requested that his wake be “…led by people who have no financial connections to him and can look each other in the eyes and honestly say they cared personally for Gary Coleman.” However, the more recent version specified that no wake should take place at all.
Gary passed away with very little wealth, and numerous creditors had financial claims against him. His ex-wife, Shannon Price, hired a lawyer, who informedABC Newsat that time, “[The estate] isn’t very valuable. There are many creditors involved. It’s likely that his assets will need to be sold and distributed, and in the end, there may not be anything remaining.”
