Hank established his own band called the Drifting Cowboys, which was managed by his mother. In 1939, he left school to focus entirely on his band’s work.
During the Drifting Cowboys’ tour schedule, Hank would also return to Montgomery, Alabama, to host his radio program. In 1941, following America’s entry into World War II, members of Hank’s band were called to military service. However, Hank was exempt from service due to a back injury he sustained from falling off a bull during a Texas rodeo.
Hank’s struggle with alcohol was severe enough to cause his Drifting Cowboys to leave and resulted in him being dismissed and then rehired multiple times by WSFA.
