EJAE’s Emotional Golden Globe Victory: ‘Golden’ Wins Best Song After 10 Years of KPop Rejection

“KPop Demon Huntershas received the Golden Globe for best original song,Golden.”
Receiving the award were songwriters EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, and Lee Hee-joon.
A weeping EJAE stated, “When I was a young girl, I dedicated 10 years of hard work to achieve one dream — to become a Kpop idol — but I was turned down and felt heartbroken because my voice wasn’t good enough.” She continued, “I’m deeply connected to a song that is supporting other girls, other queens, and everyone in overcoming their struggles and embracing themselves.”
After Sonnenblick expressed gratitude to the team at Netflix and Sony Animation, EJAE credited the award to “those who face closed doors, and I can confidently say ‘rejection is redirection,’ so never stop trying.” She concluded by quoting the lyrics of “Golden,” stating, “It’s never too late to shine as if you were meant to be.”
Its victory comes a week after the Netflix sensation was awarded best animated feature and also received an honor for best song for its top-charting track “Golden” at theCritics Choice Awards.
Other entries in the category of best original song included “Dream as One” from “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “I Lied to You” from “Sinners,” “No Place Like Home,” and “The Girl in the Bubble” from “Wicked: For Good,” as well as “Train Dreams” from “Train Dreams.”
EJAE previously told ,One of the most valuable contributions I made to the film, or when composing the songs, was my ability to speak two languages. It was crucial for our co-director, Maggie Kang, to include Korean in the lyrics, and I really appreciate that it wasn’t just in the verses; it was part of the actual song as well.
Last year, Rei Ami, the voice actress for Zoey in the movie, commented on the film’s success. She statedBeing women of color and Korean women, we frequently heard that we needed to work twice as hard, arrive earlier, and stand out more than others to gain the same level of praise or acknowledgment.” She continued, “I believe we all understand how much effort it took to reach this point on our own, and when we unite as a group, we create a wonderful harmony that spreads throughout the world, and it has been embraced so positively.
KPop Demon Hunters” received three Golden Globe nominations overall, including best animated film, cinematic and box office success, and best original song for “Golden.
Since it first appeared on Netflix in June, the movie has become the platform’s most-watched film ever, holding the top position for several weeks. In addition, three of its original songs — “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop” — have consistently ranked on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Last month, the film received three Grammy Award nominations, including the prestigious Song of the Year for “Golden.”
Other films recognized for their cinematic and box office success include “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “F1: The Movie,” “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” “Sinners,” “Weapons,” “Wicked: For Good,” and “Zootopia 2.”
“KPop Demon Hunters” has become so popular that even Netflix, which typically avoids theatrical releases, brought a sing-along edition of the movie to theaters for fan events in August and October. On its initial release, “KPop Demon Hunters” reached the top of the box office, earning approximately $18 million in two days. Later, around Halloween, the film made between $5 million and $6 million, which is impressive given that it had been accessible on streaming platforms for several months.
The parent company PMC holds a joint venture with Eldridge, which includes Golden Globes producer d**k Clark Prods.
