Elle Fanning: Dakota Promised Not to Boss Her Around on New Movie Set

Elle Fanning and sister Dakota Fanningestablished certain guidelines prior to their initial collaboration on a film.

Speaking with E! Live on the Red Carpethost Zuri Hall at the2026 Golden Globeson Sunday, January 11, Elle, 27, discussed shooting the much-anticipated filmThe Nightingale alongside her sister, also an actress named Dakota, who is 31.

When Hall inquired of Elle whether there was “a plan of attack” for collaborating with a sibling, Elle revealed that Dakota had promised not to act like an older sister.

“She’s promised me she won’t try to tell me what to do,” said theSentimental Valuestar, nominated for Best Performance in a Supporting Role by a Female Actor – Motion Picture. “That’s what she promised… the older sister. You can’t! You have to treat me like a fellow actor.”

She also provided an update regarding the film, which was initially announced over six years ago. “In a few months we are set to start filming,” she mentioned. “It has taken a few years to come together, but… this time, we’re truly making it.”

Shortly after Elle talked to Hall on the red carpet, Dakota also spoke with the host, who inquired about working with Elle. When Hall asked Dakota what one thing Elle shouldn’t do, Dakota joked, “annoy me too much,” then laughed heartily.

The Nightingale— scheduled to be released in 2027 — is adapted from Kristin Hannah’s historical fiction book that follows two sisters in France during the beginning of World War II.

“The Nightingale will mark the first time we appear on screen together,” the Fannings stated in a release.The Hollywood Reporterin December 2019, at the time the initiative was initially revealed.

“We’ve portrayed the same character at various ages but have never interacted with each other in front of a camera. For many years, we’ve been searching for a film to work on together, and then this gem came along,” added the Fannings, both of whom played Lucy, the daughter ofSean Penn’s character in 2001’s I Am Sam.

As sisters, sharing our artistic talents with one another while creating such an impactful sisterhood story is a dream realized. We are truly fortunate to have our brave director, Melanie Laurent, leading us through this journey. Let’s make it happen, sister!!
