Former Child Star Jennette McCurdy Shares Hidden Grooming Warning From Older Relationship

Jennette McCurdyshe pointed out what she referred to as a traditional grooming tactic while sharing details about dating a man who was twice her age when she was 18.

McCurdy discussed the age-gap relationship and the typical “red flag” to be aware of while promoting her first novel. The former Nickelodeon actress penned “Half His Age,” drawing from her personal experiences.

The actress mentioned that her choice to date an older man when she was young seemed reasonable at the time, influenced by her belief that she was exceptionally mature and emotionally independent. McCurdy remembered “thinking that [she] was mature, thinking that [she] was so smart that this could happen.”

“I recall thinking, ‘Oh, right, there’s something about me that’s a bit different. Like, I’m unique.’ That’s how it felt for me. I’m special, I can relate to older individuals, younger people don’t seem to be on the same level as me,” she mentioned during an appearance on”Call Her Daddy.”

McCurdy stated that the man used her apparent maturity as a reason for the age difference in their relationship.

It was, you know, ‘You’re so mature. I can’t talk to anyone like this. I can’t believe how smart you are,'” McCurdy remembered. “Like, are you serious? I was such a fool. I’m so embarrassed. Plus, it’s so humiliating that he thought that was clever or even used being smart as a way to manipulate because how ridiculous that is.

Podcast host Alexandra Cooper and McCurdy both considered the maturity remark a “red flag.”

“When you’re in the situation, it might not seem like a red flag, but I believe the idea has been shared widely enough that people now understand. If a man calls a woman ‘f—ing mature’ for her age, please take a moment to pause for five seconds and ensure that young woman is protected,” Cooper emphasized.

McCurdy described how her boyfriend at the time concealed the power dynamic by making her believe she was in control.

That it was ultimately my decision. That it was ultimately up to me. That in the end, I was the one in control. And I believe that if you feel completely powerless, you’ll fall for that,” McCurdy explained. “You know, you’ll accept it, and you’ll say, ‘Okay, I really want that sense of power even though my gut kind of knows this isn’t real, I’ll take what you’re saying, and I’ll try to make it into some form of power.’ If you’re that desperate for it, you will take the bait. And I think I did.

McCurdy’s initial fictional book arrives as she transitions her 2022 memoir, “I’m Happy My Mother Passed Away, into a TV series featuring Jennifer Aniston as her mother. She authored the book following the exploration of her childhood trauma after her mother’s passing. Debra McCurdy passed away in 2013 after a battle with cancer.

In her autobiography, McCurdy shared that her mother encouraged her to pursue acting from an early age. The actress and writer began her career as a child performer and gained fame for her role in the Nickelodeon show “iCarly” and “Sam & Cat,” which also featuredAriana Grande.

As per McCurdy, she had difficulty witheating disorders and anxietyconnected to her mother’s manipulation.

She recounted her mother’s response when McCurdy tried to bring up the topic of leaving acting during her “Call Her Daddy” episode.

There was a moment when I tried to talk to my mom about it and said, “I really don’t want to act anymore.” We were in our old Ford Windstar on the 101, and she immediately switched into that kind of mood, which was very common for her. She said, “What? No, you’ll hurt mommy’s feelings. What? No, you’re so talented. This is our chance, this is our chance, this is our family’s chance.”

“And it’s, I mean, it’s absurd, it’s that, but it’s like tears streaming down the face, yelling in a very intense, highly emotional reaction,” she said.
