Jessie Buckleyhas received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her performance in Hamnet.
The 36-year-old Irish actress plays William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, historically referred to as Anne, in the movie based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet, which centers on the couple navigating the sorrow of losing their child.
Her powerful emotional portrayal has positioned her at the center of this year’s award season, beginning with her best actress victory at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, followed by nominations for the Actor Awards, previously known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Baftas.

She has also been considered a top favorite for the Oscars, with nominations still to be revealed.
Born in Killarney, Buckley attended an all-girls convent school for five years before participating in the BBC’s I’d Do Anything talent competition in 2008 at the age of 17.
The program followed the process of finding a new actor to portray Nancy in the West End version of the musical Oliver!, with Buckley finishing as the second-place candidate, ultimately losing to Jodie Prenger, known for her role in Coronation Street.
She continued her education at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (Rada) in London and earned a BA in acting in 2013.
Her theatrical career began in the same year with the actor appearing at Shakespeare’s Globe in a performance of The Tempest, followed by a role opposite the star from The Holiday.Jude Law, in a West End production of Henry V.
Buckley later appeared in the 2016 television series adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War & Peace, where she played Marya Bolkonskaya, and made her movie debut the following year in Michael Pearce’s psychological thriller Beast alongside Johnny Flynn, known for his role in Emma.

She later appeared in Wild Rose (2018), a coming-of-age musical film centered on a difficult single mother of two and ex-convict, Rose-Lynn from Glasgow, who strives to pursue her dream of becoming a country musician – a performance that earned her the 2019 Scottish Bafta for best actress.
In 2020, Buckley appeared with Jesse Plemons in the psychological thriller I’m Thinking Of Ending Things, in which a trip to her boyfriend’s remote family farm alters everything she believed about him.
She also has a series of television credits, including portraying Lyudmilla Ignatenko in the 2019 HBO drama Chernobyl and later appearing in the popular series Fargo as Oraetta Mayflower.
Her filmography includes appearing in The Lost Daughter (2021) alongsideOlivia Coleman, a role that earned her her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the period film Women Talking (2022) alongside the actress from The CrownClaire Foythe real-life account of a group of women who come to understand the full scope of the sexual abuse they have suffered at the hands of men within their religious community once they start discussing their experiences with each other.
Recently, Buckley reunited with Coleman in the 2023 film Wicked Little Letters and appeared alongside the star of Four Lions.Riz Ahmedand Jeremy Allen White from The Bear in the sci-fi romance Fingernails about a woman who starts to doubt her relationship even after a controversial test result claims they are a perfect match.
In 2022, Buckley received the Laurence Olivier Award for best actress in a musical for her performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret.
