The fourth season of “Industry” could be seen as a gentle reset, with HBO’s impressive financial series officially leaving behind the intense trading floor of Pierpoint. However, in Sunday’s opening episode, certain elements might remain the same, and past behaviors? They are hard to shake off.

As we return to the lives of Harper (Myha’la) and Yasmin (Marisa Abela), the women are now living the lives they once dreamed of after establishing themselves in the industry as graduates of Pierpoint. However, when a high-profile fintech company named Tender emerges, Yasmin is tasked with rescuing Sir Henry Muck from the fallout following Lumi’s failure and a major election loss. Meanwhile, Harper becomes involved with Tender’s mysterious executive, Whitney Halberstram (Max Minghella). In true “Industry” style, the women’s relationship—whether it’s still considered a friendship—starts to change again as the competition to benefit from Tender intensifies.

Under Otto Mostyn’s control, Harper isn’t experiencing the best of times. She feels overly monitored, even though she was promised her own fund, which makes her question what to do next. During a call with Eric, who has since retired (played by Ken Leung), she plants a small suggestion. “Perhaps we could just discuss what it might look like,” she implies. “Don’t stay away.” By the end of the conversation, Eric is at her door, confessing that he “didn’t do well chasing pleasure.” He’s focused on work, while Harper is warm and welcoming. But is their new project a true… “partnership”? As they work through the specifics, Harper mentions she won’t be someone else’s target for a man’s fears. She also wants her name on the door. “Me too,” Eric says.

Will Harper and Eric endure one another?

They’re going to do everything they can,” Myha’la says. “I believe Harper understands, more than Eric, that having a personal relationship—something intimate involving their thoughts, emotions, dreams, and desires beyond work—is simply not a good idea. It’s too unstable. They care too much for each other.

Harper might try to maintain her calm expression, but as Leung states, the relationship between these two fiery ex-colleagues could be permanently changed.

It’s unlike anything we’ve witnessed before,” he says. “It’s not just about collaborating in business. At least for him. From the beginning, he requests from Harper a new approach to communication. He says, ‘Can we learn to talk to each other in a different way? Can I understand you in a new way?’ So, I believe for him, he has retired. It’s less about the business endeavor and more about learning how to be in a relationship.

We have witnessed the extreme nature of this pair, with Harper operating under Eric’s aggressive and often harsh leadership. However, now that both individuals are on equal terms, audiences might be taken aback by the outcome. Particularly considering how Eric’s attitude and treatment of Harper will evolve.

I believe, on a cellular level, she recognizes that opening that door would be like opening floodgates,” says Myha’la, “and if anything goes wrong, it would be catastrophic for both of them. So she clearly knows not to take that step, even though he is attempting to create a sort of pseudo father-daughter relationship.

Will these two resolve their conflicts and get along, or are they a time bomb set to explode? Rate the first episode below, then share your thoughts in the comments!
