The Hacks star — who Won Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedyfor her portrayal of Deborah Vance — delivered multiple comments on the red carpet before the awards ceremony, emphasizing that her attention was directed towards politics rather than entertainment on Sunday, January 11.

“Everything seems to be somewhat overshadowed by what’s happening in our country,” Smart, 74, said.Entertainment Tonight. She was questioned on the progress of the filming processthe fifth and last seasonof the HBO comedy show she is part of withHannah Einbinderbut she changed the topic to current events.

“I believe we’re at a critical moment in this country, and I hope they can remain composed, because that’s actually, truly, the most challenging part, I think, is staying level-headed,” she said.ETIt will require a great deal of bravery and self-control, but I believe it’s essential.

“I have a sense that some forces would prefer us to retaliate and perhaps… I’m not sure, but it’s quite troubling,” Smart stated.

She also responded to criticism about Hollywood celebrities discussing political matters: “I know there are people who find it irritating when actors use such opportunities to discuss social and political topics. But I’m not speaking as an actress right now; I’m just expressing myself as a citizen and a mother, and I hope they can understand that.”

In a different interview on the red carpet withVariety, Smart added more about her current feelings. “I’m not as hopeful about things these days, about the world these days, but I just hope they understand how crucial what’s happening right now is,” she said.

She also mentioned to the outlet that she doesn’t “feel like my opinion is more important than anyone else’s,” but “I believe that if you feel strongly about something, and you have the opportunity to express your thoughts or support or motivate someone, you should take that chance.”

In her victory speech at the event, Smart discussed the remarks she had made on the red carpet.
