Jodie Fosteris contemplating her popular speech from 2013Golden Globes.
The Panic Roomactress addressed her comments during the award event — which sparked extensive rumors that she was revealing her queer identity — in a recentinterview with Variety.
“They were puzzled!” Foster mentioned about the Golden Globes’ audience after her speech.
As she received the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the 2013 event, Foster expressed gratitude to Cydney Bernard, the co-parent of her two sons, whom she referred to as “one of the deepest loves of my life” and “my former partner in love but a righteous soul sister in life.”
In her speech, the actress also mentioned that she “had already come out a thousand years ago during the Stone Age, in those charming times when a delicate young girl would share her truth with close friends, family, and coworkers, and then proudly reveal it to everyone she encountered.”

However, Foster did not explicitly declare her queer identity in the speech, nor did she present the remarks as a coming-out statement. However, she humorously introduced the speech as if it were one.wasA farewell speech, stating, “I have an unexpected desire to express something I’ve never truly shared publicly” and declaring herself “loud and proud” before disclosing, “I am single.”
In her conversation with Variety, Foster detailed the rationale for the manner of her speech.
It was crucial that it be so literary,” she stated, “as I was aware that it would be fragmented and misunderstood.
Foster also mentioned that she hoped the speech would act as a snapshot of her at age 50, so that “in 20 years, my children can look back” and see her during that stage of her life.
Foster’s Globes speech focused on the conflict between fame and personal privacy, just as much as it did on her own life. “I’ve been told that every celebrity is supposed to share the details of their private life through a press conference, a perfume, and a prime-time reality show,” she mentioned at that time. “You know, you might be shocked, but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. No, I’m sorry, that’s just not who I am. It never has been and never will be. Please don’t cry because my reality show would be incredibly dull.”

She added, “But truly, if you had been a public figure since you were a toddler, if you had to struggle for a life that felt genuine, sincere, and ordinary despite everything, then perhaps you would also prioritize privacy above everything else. Privacy.”
