Kristi Noem appeared shocked when questioned by Jake Tapper about the killing of Renee Good, a mother of three from Minneapolis who was fatally shot by an ICE officer this month.
In the closing moments of CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Tapper showed footage of Noem from the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol and drew a parallel between that day’s events and those that occurred on the day Good passed away.
Those are law enforcement officers who are being physically attacked,” he stated. “According to this standard, would any of these officers be justified in shooting and killing the individuals inflicting harm upon them?
Noem seemed to suggest that Capitol police would have been justified in shooting protesters on January 6.
Each specific scenario will depend on the circumstances the officers are facing,” she responded. “However, they understand that when individuals are touching them, using weapons against them, or physically injuring them, they have the right to make an arrest.
After Tapper mentioned that Donald Trump pardoned the rioters, Noem appeared to look for a different argument. “And every one of these investigations takes place within the full context of the situation on the ground,” she stated.
She added, “One aspect that President Trump has emphasized significantly is ensuring that when we are in the field, we do not selectively decide which situations involve enforcement of the law and which ones do not. Under the Trump administration, every single instance is being enforced, and the law remains clear. If individuals are dissatisfied with this, these members of Congress and elected officials should work to amend the law and ensure there is a proper discussion and policy development.”
But Tapper continued. “I just showed you footage of individuals assaulting law enforcement officers,” he stated. “Unquestionable proof, undeniable evidence. And I just mentioned that President Trump pardoned all of them. And you claimed that President Trump is upholding all laws equally. That’s not accurate. There’s a different standard when law enforcement officers are attacked by Trump supporters. We’ve just witnessed that.”
Noem sidestepped Tapper’s question and said, “This person, these cases, and these investigations all need to be handled properly within the context of every situation occurring on the ground… The Department of Homeland Security is working alongside our law enforcement officers, ensuring that we are focusing on the most dangerous individuals and discussing each situation factually, while making sure those who commit violence are held accountable and face the consequences of their actions.”
The Trump administration challenged the reportsabout the death of Good from last week.
I am formally urging the New York Times to revise their coverage regarding the ICE agent’s self-defense incident in Minnesota,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in an X post on Friday. “President Trump was correct once more.
Leavitt also posted a screenshot from the Times’ interview with Trump that was released on Thursday, during which the president viewed footage of the shooting.
“After our interview with the president on Thursday, a Times analysis of video from three camera angles revealed that a driver was moving away from — not approaching — a federal officer when he fired his weapon,” the Times’ article stated.
But on Wednesday evening, Mr. Trump maintained his stance despite our highlighting the contradictions in his statement and the ambiguity of the videos shared on social media. We questioned whether, in his view, shooting at a vehicle like that was justifiable.
She acted terribly,” Mr. Trump stated. “And then she hit him. She didn’t attempt to hit him. She ran him over.
In new footage, which terminating ICE agent Jonathan RossHe used his personal cellphone, and Ross is shown exiting his car and heading towards Good, who is inside her vehicle. He then goes to the driver’s side of Good’s car, where she says to him, “That’s fine, man. I’m not upset with you,” in reference to him filming her. The video was first acquired by Alpha News.
Ross then filmed Good’s license plate while Good’s wife, Becca Good, recorded him. At one moment, Becca said to Ross, “You want to come at us? I say go get yourself some lunch, big boy. Go ahead.”
Right after that, another officer came up to Good on the driver’s side of the vehicle and grabbed her door handle while instructing her to “get out of the damn car.” At this point, Good is seen reversing and turning her wheel to the right—as if to go around Ross—and then moving forward before Ross exclaimed in shock and fired his gun three times.
