The second-to-last “Landman” episode of Season 2 dramatically disrupts Tommy’s career in a way that seems surprising… even though both he and Gallino had discussed the possibility just a few episodes prior.
By the conclusion of “Plans, Tears, and Sirens,” Tommy Norris is no longer working for MTex. Even worse, Cami informs her former landman, now an executive, about the news.afterShe has made him spend half his day flying to the Gulf to observe the Rig of Bad Decisions becoming operational.
In other sad news, Ariana was the victim of a terrible attack outside The Patch Café. Once you’re finished here, be sure to watch what Paulina Chavéz shared with me about filming the intense scene. But first, let’s go over Episode 9.

Rebecca and Charlie reconcile and share a kiss
The house is in complete disarray as Dale, Nate, and Tommy tackle the gulf rig—set to be launched—and Angela and Ainsley get ready for cheer camp. Tommy heads to the backyard seeking some peace and discovers T.L. calmly savoring the morning.
They mention the “physical therapy” Tommy set up for his dad, who is thankful. “Happy birthday, merry Christmas and any other holiday that calls for a present,” Tommy jokes. T.L. appears… content? Is this what joy looks like for him? It’s hard to tell, since we don’t often see it, but I like it!
They discuss T.L.’s new treatment plan a bit more (“Son, there’s very little Cheyenne could ask me to do that I wouldn’t attempt”), then Tommy throws his cigarette into the pool to put it out (disgusting), and T.L. makes him retrieve it — he has water therapy later.
In another part of town, Charlie is about to leave his horse behind to be with the MTex team at the Gulf site when he opens his front door and is taken aback to see Rebecca there. She apologizes (“I took it personally. It wasn’t right of me”) and states she doesn’t want to end things between them. “I’m not hearing an apology,” he replies, and she responds that she isn’t giving one: “This is a truce.” However, when he refuses that as well, she quickly says “I’m sorry.” She confesses she’s feeling lonely but wants her life to change. He is definitely ready to forgive her, but he makes her admit she’s “infatuated,” and soon they are kissing.
The thing is, he’ll have to stay on the rig for the next six months. Yet neither of them seem too concerned about it as he playfully mentions her avoiding alligators to see him and sending him “home videos” to pass the time. “Before I come to visit, I’d like to talk about the mullet,” she jokes, appearing very affectionate as he gets into the truck.
Cami swings the hatchet
Tommy, Dale, Nate, and Rebecca board the MTex plane to Fort Worth to pick up Cami, who steps on in a stunning pink outfit that stands in sharp contrast to the messy tasks ahead..They land in Louisiana and reunite with Gallino, who has invited Bella to spend the day with him.
Remember what I mentioned about Cami’s dress not matching the day? I was completely mistaken, because Monty’s widow is hosting a garden party to mark the rig’s launch. There are tablecloths, mint juleps, and everything else you’d expect. “If you’re going to take a risk, you might as well celebrate,” Cami remarks. She’s exhilarated by the thrill of taking chances, something Tommy claims he no longer gets enjoyment from. “The president of my company can’t be against the very thing that created it,” she states. And Tommy already knows what she’s about to say, but he wants to hear it anyway. “I’m saying you’re fired,” she says, sliding her sunglasses on before heading back to the party to watch the rig pass by.
Mama’s coming!
Angela struggles to hold it together as she drops Ainsley off for cheer camp at Texas Christian University. Once the teenager enters the dorm, Angie breaks down and calls the one person who can help her feel better: Jamie, her personal shopper at Neiman Marcus. Meanwhile, Ainsley meets her roommate, a student studying sports medicine named Paigyn (“like the godless religion?” our innocent, clueless girl asks), who is from Minneapolis and has a pet ferret. Paigyn is essentially the complete opposite of Ainsley: a vegan who uses they/them pronouns and corrects Ainsley’s language (calling “penetrate” “triggering”) and insists that no meat or animal products be brought into the room, which is a “safe space.” Ainsley has had enough. “I’ll see them later,” she says, stepping into the hallway and shedding a few tears.
Ainsley immediately goes to Greta’s office, where the admissions counselor tells her to be confident and “act like the adult your driver’s license says you are.” However, Ainsley calls Angela, who rushes over, threatens to become a “tornado,” and convinces Greta to grant Ainsley a medical exemption—this time for allergies—so she can stay in a hotel suite for the week of camp. Oh, and Mama Norris will remain to drive her child to and from cheerleader camp. Because taxis and/or ride-sharing services don’t exist in Fort Worth, apparently? “I wish you could stay with me all through college,” Ainsley says as Angela loads her bags back into the car. “Well, baby girl, that might just be the plan!”
Evil comes for Ariana
Let’s take a brief moment of humor before the episode’s very dark conclusion, okay? In a pleasant conversation between T.L. and his “therapist” by the pool that evening, we discover that Cheyenne’s real name is Penny, and she has $162,000 saved to fund her dreams of traveling the world. Go girl!
And now, the dreadful part.
Ariana goes outside during her shift at Patch Café to call Abuela and check on Miguel. She believes she’s secure, so she’s completely caught off guard when Johnny, the repulsive customer she splashed with a drink on her first day, approaches her with anger in his eyes and racist slurs on his mouth. He pushes her to the ground, climbs on top of her, and tears open her shirt. He is trying to assault her when Cooper (thank goodness) arrives and pulls him away from her.
Cooper beats the guy relentlessly, causing Ariana to plead with him to stop before he harms the pig. He finally ceases, though unwillingly. As Cooper checks on Ariana to see if she’s injured, bartender Barney emerges outside. He promptly calls the police and has two large bar employees keep Johnny in place. The last shot gives the impression that the entire event was recorded by a security camera.
Now it’s your turn. What was your opinion on the episode? Share your thoughts in the comments!
