Timothy Busfieldsubmitted key documents for his defense after beingformally accused in a child sexual abuse case, responding to the State of New Mexico’s request to detain him before trial and providing a list of possible witnesses that included his wife, Melissa Gilbert.
In papers submitted by and on behalf of Busfield’s legal team on Friday, the actor listed 13 names who could act as “potential witnesses” for his defense before his pretrial detention hearing on January 20.
Among the names listed was Busfield’s wife, an actress who is most recognized for portraying Laura Ingalls Wilder on NBC’s “Little House on the Prairie.” For a long time, Gilbert remained notably quiet after her husband’s arrest on allegations of child sexual abuse, stating through a representative that she would not be making “public statements at this time.” However, the representative mentioned on Tuesday — following Busfield surrendering to law enforcement — that “[Gilbert] stands by and supports her husband and will speak to the public when the time is right.” She has since composed a character reference letter on Busfield’s behalf (more details to come later).
Besides Gilbert, Busfield’s legal team listed several members of the “The Cleaning Lady” cast and crew — such as hairstylist Kristin Karr, cinematographer Alan Caudillo, actress Debra Toner, and hairstylist Danielle Vigil — as the Fox show was reportedly where the inappropriate behavior occurred.
As we reported earlier, Busfield faced charges oftwo charges of criminal sexual contactA minor and an open count of child abuse, arising from an investigation into his connection with child actors he directed on Fox’s “The Cleaning Lady.” He directed six episodes of the show between 2022 and 2025 and served as executive producer for 14 episodes.
As an additional allegation surfacedagainst Busfield this week, he strongly refuted the claims in a video released prior to surrendering to law enforcement in New Mexico on Tuesday.
I’m going to address these falsehoods,” he stated at that moment. “They are terrible. They are entirely false, and I never harmed those young boys.
Busfield also rejected the claims in his filing on Friday, arguing that the accusers were not trustworthy and had financial reasons for making the accusations.
The State’s argument is primarily based on the statements of two stage parents… whose children were replaced from ‘The Cleaning Lady’ in 2024,” according to Busfield’s document. “These individuals are not impartial. Their claims surfaced only following the loss of the twins’ role—and only after speaking with legal representatives—indicating a clear financial and retaliatory reason. This motivation should be considered alongside the couple’s documented record of deceit and dishonesty.
Busfield also shared results from a lie detector test, where he was deemed “truthful” following his denial of inappropriate contact with a claimed victim. Furthermore, he presented 75 letters from coworkers, friends, and relatives, all supporting his character and professional conduct.
Gilbert was one of the individuals who sent a letter, stating, “I will never be able to convey the extent of thanks I feel toward God for introducing this amazing person into our lives.”
She said, “My husband, just like my father, was in the military, and that experience only strengthened the things he holds dear—honor, integrity, compassion, and concern for others.”
As she continued, she informed the judge that this was “the most unusual letter” she had ever been asked to write. “I am attempting to balance between reason and all the emotions swirling inside me,” Gilbert remarked. “I started this letter with logic, but now the emotions have taken control. I can’t stop it. I simply want this remarkable man to be safe and well.”
