In the world of college football, few stories are as inspiring as that of Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza and his mother, Elsa Mendoza. While the young star has been celebrated for his exceptional performance on the field, it is the strength and resilience of his mother that have truly shaped his journey. Elsa Mendoza, who suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS), has become a symbol of perseverance, and her battle with the disease has deeply influenced both her sons, Fernando and Alberto.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system, causing a range of symptoms such as muscle weakness, fatigue, and mobility issues. For Elsa Mendoza, the disease has progressed over the years, leading to significant physical challenges. She now uses a wheelchair to move around and requires constant care and support. Despite these obstacles, she remains a source of inspiration for her family, especially her son, Fernando.

Elsa Mendoza’s journey with MS began approximately 18 years ago when she was diagnosed. However, her condition took a severe turn five years ago when she contracted COVID-19, which exacerbated her symptoms and made daily life even more challenging. Despite this, she continued to be a strong presence in her sons’ lives, offering them emotional support and encouragement.
Her relationship with Fernando is particularly special. In a heartfelt letter published in The Players’ Tribune before the Heisman Trophy ceremony, she expressed how much he has helped her cope with her illness. “You’ve made it so much easier,” she wrote. “And you’ve done that in the sweetest, strongest, most Fernando way possible — by making me feel the exact opposite of embarrassed.”
Fernando, in turn, has often spoken about how his mother’s determination and positivity have motivated him. During the Heisman Trophy acceptance speech, he dedicated the award to her, saying, “Mami, this is your trophy as much as it is mine.” His words reflected not only his gratitude but also the deep bond they share.
Beyond their personal connection, the Mendoza family has also taken steps to raise awareness and funds for MS research. Fernando and his brother Alberto have partnered with local businesses to create special menu items, with proceeds going to the National MS Society. Additionally, through his partnership with Adidas, Fernando organized a shopping spree for four families affected by MS, providing them with financial assistance.
Elsa’s story is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child. Her journey with MS has not only shaped her own life but has also inspired those around her, including her sons, who continue to carry her spirit with them every time they step onto the field.

As Fernando Mendoza continues to make history on the football field, his mother’s legacy of strength and courage will always be a part of his story. Their journey is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the love and support of family can help overcome any challenge.
