In a world where craft beer has long been associated with bold flavors and high alcohol content, a new trend is quietly gaining momentum: Dad Strength Brewing. This unique brand, founded by two longtime friends and new fathers, Craig Carey and Ryan Kutscher, is redefining what it means to enjoy a good beer without the heavy hangovers or excessive calories. Launched in 2023, Dad Strength Brewing has quickly become a favorite among parents, health-conscious drinkers, and anyone looking for a more balanced approach to their beverage choices.

Carey and Kutscher, both in their 40s and raising young children, found themselves at a crossroads. Their love for hoppy, flavorful IPAs was overshadowed by the reality of their changing metabolisms. “I had two IPAs, probably like 7 percent ABV, and I had my first two-beer hangover,” Carey recalls. The realization that traditional craft beers were no longer compatible with their lifestyle led them to experiment with mixing regular and nonalcoholic beers to create a drink around 3% ABV. When they couldn’t find a full-flavored option on the market, they decided to brew their own.

The result was Dad Strength Brewing, a brand that prides itself on delivering the robust flavor of a traditional IPA without the harsh effects of high alcohol content. The flagship product, a West Coast-style IPA, boasts a 2.9% ABV and 94 calories per can. Despite its low alcohol content, it still delivers the familiar grapefruit and piney hop character of a much stronger IPA. According to Axios, the beer has “more flavor than a NA beer, but not as strong or caloric as a traditional IPA.”

The name “Dad Strength” is a nod to the concept of a beer strength suited to parents and moderation. As Carey explains, “We were in our late 30s, early 40s, and we love beer, but beer stopped loving us back. And we needed a different strength of beer for these two dads.” This philosophy extends beyond just the product—it’s reflected in the company’s marketing and distribution strategy. Dad Strength emphasizes that its beers are “mid-strength” or “sessionable” drinks, ideal for those who want to enjoy the taste of a traditional craft beer without the high alcohol content.

Dad Strength Brewing expanding distribution across the Mid-Atlantic

Since its debut in mid-2024, Dad Strength has seen rapid growth. Initially available in local outlets, the IPA was carried in roughly 300 stores across the Washington, D.C. region by Father’s Day 2024. The product line later expanded to Michigan and the Mid-Atlantic, with plans to open a dedicated production facility in DC’s Anacostia area. The company has also partnered with established local breweries like Atlas Brew Works and DC Brau to develop its products, ensuring quality and consistency.

The brand has also received significant media attention for its innovative approach. A feature in Axios highlighted the beer as “micro-dosing alcohol,” noting that the co-founders hope it appeals to not just dads, but anyone interested in exploring moderation. The beers have been featured on local TV and in publications like Men’s Health, which included the Dad Strength IPA on a 2025 list of best low-calorie beers.

In 2025, Dad Strength took another big step forward when the founders appeared on Shark Tank. The appearance led to a handshake deal with three celebrity sharks: Rashaun Williams, Lori Greiner, and Robert Herjavec. Carey described the experience as “a pretty wild experience,” adding, “I think Ryan plays it cool. As for myself, I was definitely nervous.”

With the success of their initial offerings, the company is now working on expanding its product line. A Hazy IPA is in the works, and the team is already planning for future releases. “This hazy IPA is just incredible because there’s no bitterness. It’s super tropical,” Carey says. The brand continues to focus on innovation while staying true to its core mission: providing a beer that fits into a balanced lifestyle.

As the demand for lower-alcohol, flavorful beverages continues to grow, Dad Strength Brewing is well-positioned to lead the way. With its unique approach and commitment to quality, the brand is proving that you don’t need high alcohol content to enjoy a great beer. For parents, health-conscious drinkers, and anyone looking for a more moderate approach to their beverage choices, Dad Strength Brewing is a welcome addition to the craft beer scene.
