The actress has been nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role as Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’sWicked: For Good.
The nomination represents a significant milestone for Erivo. After receiving her first nomination last year for the original film in the franchise, she is thefirst Black womanto be acknowledged twice in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. The film also received additional nominations at this year’s Globes, including Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Original Song (“No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble”), and Best Supporting Actress forco-star Ariana Grande.
According to Variety, Erivo’s absence is because of a scheduling issue with her ongoing stage production in London. She is currently appearing in the West End version ofDracula, a solo stage adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic horror story, in which she portrays all 23 characters, including the legendary vampire. The show will debut at the Noël Coward Theatre in February and continue until the end of May.
